about Stephen Schulman

With a degree in theater and more than six years publicity experience on projects that range from downtown NYC acts to Academy-Award nominated feature films, Stephen Schulman is quick to recognize the unique requirements of his clients’ work.  Working with a wealth of press connections on both national and local levels, Schulman's creative approach to publicity has not only satisfied bigger clients but also earned surprising results for more grassroots projects.

During his years as a freelance publicist, Schulman created and implemented publicity campaigns for dozens of high-profile specialized films, including Gurinder Chadha’s "What’s Cooking?", Alejandro González Iñárritu’s "Amores Perros," and the IMAX film “Space Station 3-D”.

Schulman has worked on a number of high-profile nonfiction films as well. He spearheaded publicity campaigns for "Spellbound,” the 2002 Academy Award nominated documentary about the national spelling bee; "Our House” a film by Meema Spadola about the children of gay & lesbian parents; and "Lance Loud! A Death in an American Family," Alan & Susan Raymond’s film about the legendary Lance Loud from An American Family.

One of Schulman’s fondest memories to date would have to be working with Margaret Cho on “I’m the One that I Want”, which made the most per print out of any film in film history. Recognizing the uniqueness of Cho’s project, Schulman implemented an innovative publicity campaign that relied heavily on grassroots advertising, from handing out fliers at the NYC Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade to targeting the Asian media.

In April of 2003 Schulman decided to launch SASi Public Relations & Marketing.

In addition to film projects, he has also worked with individual artists including international gay icon Ari Gold, drag super star RuPaul, electro hip-hop performer Houston Bernard, plus size dance troupe The Glamazons, downtown personality Goddess Perlman, and bands such as the amazingly talented jazz singer Barbara Rosene and her New Yorkers.

Recently, Schulman worked as the publicist for "Garmento," a fashion comedy starring Saundra Santiago, David Thornton and Juan Carlos Hernandez and directed by Michele Maher which opened in theatres in NY, LA, Dallas and Houston respectively. Schulman also served as publicist for the RDP Groups’ 10th and 11th International Gay & Lesbian Business & Entertainment Expo which attracted thousands of people from around the country in March of 2003 and 2004. SASi PR also garnered national press recognition for The Glamazons’ production of Caution, Curves Ahead which played to sold out crowds at FEZ in 2002. Other SASi PR projects include Glen Hansons’ animated book GMAN which arrived in stores nationwide October of 2004, the Grammy nominated trippy-soul group P-1 and drag legend Hedda Letuce.

Current SASi PR projects include the off-Broadway hit SHOWGIRLS: The Best Movie Ever Made. Ever!, recording artists Naked Highway, Nekked, Luke Parkin, Athena Reich, Andrew Suvalsky & Josh Zuckerman, comedians Negin Farsad & The Glamazons and the non-profit organization Living Beyond Belief.
